PID Controller - The oldest and trusted in process control

PID controller is the oldest and widely used controller across process plants all over the world. The PID controller has proven track record and operations on PID has been running plants years together with the least possible hazzles. The advantage of PID in the modern age process plants is that the operation of Basic PID has been accompanied by various features like FeedForward, Backtracking, External Reset, reset on windup and wind down, to name a few.

Proportional Integral and Differential Controller:
The sole purpose of the Controller is bring the output of a closed loop to a significant status such that the difference between the expected stage and the current stage is zero.
which means, the output of PID to the closed loop's control element depends on the difference between the current process value and the expected value called the setpoint.

so the output, say Y = F(error) where error = setpoint - process value

This is called the fundamental closed loop system principle.
The PID output Y can be said to be either increasing or decreasing to manipulate the error to zero and this depends on the nature of the PID. A PID can be direct controller or indirect/reverse controller.

Direct Controller Character:

The output Y , if the process value is Incresing w.r.t setpoint then the Output Y increases.
In that case, the error can be simply said as error =~ Process Value - Setpoint

Reverse Controller Character:

The output Y , if the process value is Incresing w.r.t setpoint then the Output Y decreases.
In that case, the error can be simply said as error =~ Setpoint - Process Value
